The Lee University women's tennis team stepped out of conference play on Sunday and came away with a 6-1 win over Lincoln Memorial University at the DeVos Tennis Center.
"This match was probably won with our start," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our ladies did a great job preparing themselves to play today and it showed with doubles. All three pairs made a great start."
The Lady Flames (4-2) posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead. Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser beat Julia Valls and Amanda Dahlstrom 6-1, while Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson were 6-3 winners over Kristin Vogel and Samantha Hogan.
LMU (2-4) avoided the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win by Johanna Delisse and Valentina Ascarrunz against Lisa Kirr and Matina Ujdur.
Belen Maiz took down Delisse 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to keep the Lee momentum going. Kirr recovered from losing 6-3 in her first set with 6-3 and 6-2 scores to defeat Valls at the top position. Ujdur fell to Ascarrunz 6-4 in the first set before clinching the team win with 6-4 and 6-3 margins in the next two sets.
"Mica was able to keep the pressure on with a good win," added Hynes. "Lisa and Matina both had very gritty wins from a set down."
Vogel again spoiled Lee's shutout attempt. She posted matching 6-4 scores to edge Sickinger and give LMU their first team point.
Hayden Smith won at No. 6 singles, 6-4 and 6-0, against Claudia Rodriguez. Donaldson completed the team score with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mae Fitzgerald.
"I'm proud of our team, they had to really fight to get this one, LMU made us play a lot of tough points. Now we will get some rest and recovery and get ready for Valdosta next week," Hynes concluded.
The Lady Flames return to competition on Saturday, March 13. The GSC matchup with Valdosta State is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
