MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team swept the doubles competition and claimed four of the six singles matches to defeat the University of Montevallo 5-2 Sunday afternoon.
Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi got the Flames (8-5, 3-4 GSC) started with a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Tanguy David and Jonathan de Jesus. The 19
th-ranked doubles team of Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons held off Philippe Zehender and Milan Ludlage 6-4. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons completed the doubles sweep after edging James Bloomer and Brecht Van Buggenhout 7-5.
Daniel Del Val won 6-1 and 6-1 against Dasi to even the team score at 1-1. Nico Ramirez dropped just four games to Zehender to win 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Dylan Valentine pulled Montevallo (4-9, 3-4 GSC) even again with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Garcia at No. 1 singles.
Cristian Pons took down David 6-2 and 6-1 to pull the Flames within one point of securing the team win. Antonio Pons edged Gavin Salton 6-3, 7-5at No. 5 singles to clinch the Lee victory. Diego Garcia supplied the final team margin with matching 6-3 set scores in a straight-set win over Jules Dugue.
"Montevallo is a tough place to play," admitted Lee head coach Patric Hynes. I thought our guys handled themselves really well today. We came out sharp in doubles and did really well to maintain our focus all day. We'll need to recover and get ready for another battle with AUM tomorrow."
The Flames and Warhawks are scheduled to play at the AUM Tennis Complex Monday at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
