MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University men's tennis team was edged 4-3 by No. 19 Auburn University Mongomery Monday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference match at the AUM Tennis Complex.
AUM (10-5, 5-2 GSC) swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. David Rieme and Joao Guariente defeated Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons 6-0. Muhamad Bedwan and Francisco Jimenez were 6-2 winners against Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons. Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi were double-up by Nino Portugal and Jonathan Judy-Hansen.
Guariente extended the AUM lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cristian Pons at No. 3 singles. Diego Garcia put Lee (8-6, 3-5 GSC) on the board after beating Portugal 6-4 and 6-3.
Nico Ramirez evened the team score at 2-2 with a three-set win over 46
th-ranked Rieme. Ramirez won the first set 6-2, dropped the second set 6-1 and completed the win at No. 2 singles with a 6-3 margin in the third set.
Jimenez put AUM back into the lead with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Antonio Pons. No. 19 Jesus Garcia needed three sets to take down the 43
rd-ranked Bedwan. Garcia won the first set 6-3 before Bedwan forced a third set with a 7-5 second-set advantage. Garcia collected the match win with a 6-1 score in the third set.
The No. 6 singles match between Prata and Adrien Guye was the final point remaining. Guye held off Prata to win the opening set 7-6 and clinched the team victory for AUM with a 6-2 second-set score.
The Flames are scheduled to complete their regular season schedule with a trip to Clinton, Miss., on Thursday, April 15. The GSC match against Mississippi College is set to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
