CLINTON, Miss. – The Lee University men's tennis team completed its regular season with a 7-0 win at Mississippi College Thursday afternoon.
"It's been a big couple of weeks for these guys, a lot of tough matches and to bounce back after a tough loss on Monday and finish our regular season with a good road win is nice," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes.
The Choctaws (2-11, 1-6 GSC) gained an early advantage as Paolo Scorzoni and Maksym Konovalov beat Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons 7-5 at No. 2 doubles. The Flames (9-6, 4-5 GSC) picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to collect the doubles point. Nico Ramirez and Diego Garcia posted a 7-2 tiebreak score to defeat Joe Jarvis and Brady McDaniel 7-6 at No. 3 doubles. The ITA's 19
th-ranked doubles team of Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons secured the doubles point after winning 7-6 over Matias Ballatore and Carlos Trujillo with a 7-4 tiebreak.
Jordi Dasi extended the Lee lead with a quick 6-1, 6-0 win over Scorzoni. Ramirez took down McDaniel and No. 2 singles by the same set scores. Cristian Pons clinched the team win with a 6-2, 6-4 advantage over Jarvis.
Jesus Garcia, ranked No. 19 in singles, defeated Ballatore in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3. Antonio Pons needed an 8-6 tie-break score to win his first set with Shane Samyn 7-6. Pons completed the No. 5 singles win with a 6-3 margin in the second set.
"Jordi was very solid today. He has had a big learning curve this spring. Diego also had a very good win over a very solid player," added Hynes.
Diego Garcia dropped his opening set 6-4 to Konovalov before responding with a 6-1 win in the second set and a 10-6 superset win in the third set.
"Overall, this was a good effort by our guys to take all the singles matches today. We'll get back home, get some rest and recovery and look forward to the GSC Tournament," Hynes concluded.
The GSC Men's Tennis Championship is scheduled for April 22-24 at Lagoon Park and O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
