MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team claimed its third-straight victory with a 4-3 margin over the University of Montevallo Sunday afternoon.
Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser opened doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Courtney Piltaver and Victoria Rauscher at the No. 2 position.
Montevallo (4-10, 2-6 GSC) posted wins in the last two doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Eva Dirr and Cyba Ozzor doubled-up Lisa Kirr and Matina Ujdur 6-3, while Mireia Turro and Whitney Hamilton held off Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson to win 6-4 at the third position.
Turro extended Montevallo's lead with a 6-1, 6-4 defeat of Kirr at No. 1 singles.
Lee (8-4, 5-3 GSC) grabbed the next two singles wins to even the team score at 2-2. Hayden Smith dropped her opening set 6-3 to Hamilton before bouncing back and winning the next two sets by 6-3 and 6-2 margins. Maiz also needed three sets to dispose of Ozzor at No. 2 singles. Ozzor won the first set 6-1 and Maiz forced a third set after winning 6-2 in the second. Maiz completed the comeback with a 7-1 tiebreak to win the third set 7-6.
Dirr put the Falcons back on top with a three-set win over Ujdur. Dirr won the first and third sets by matching 6-1 scores, while Ujdur won the second set 6-4.
Sickinger used a 7-5 tiebreak score in the second set to win in straight sets (6-2, 7-6) over Rauscher at the fourth spot to leave the No. 5 singles match as the decider. Donaldson took down Piltaver 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the match for the Lady Flames.
"We didn't play our best match, but we found a way to win and that's what good teams do," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Montevallo were a tough opponent and it was nice to come away with a win. Looking forward to another tough battle with AUM tomorrow."
The Lady Flames and Warhawks are scheduled to play at the AUM Tennis Complex Monday at 12:30 p.m. EDT.
