MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team lost 5-2 to No. 23 Auburn University Mongomery Monday afternoon in a Gulf South Conference match at the AUM Tennis Complex.
AUM (8-5, 5-3 GSC) two of three matches in doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead. Sofia Mustre and Isabella Pinto beat Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson 6-2 at No. 3 doubles. Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser were 6-3 winners over Tonja Foessmeier and Alba De La Torre. Julia Enderink and Maria Casas secured the doubles point for AUM with a 6-3 win over Lisa Kirr and Matina Ujdur.
Casas extended the AUM lead with a 6-1, 6-3 No. 2 singles win over Maiz and Mustre pushed the hosts to within one of claiming the team win with a three-set win over Sickinger. Sickinger won the opening set 6-4, but Mustre responded with 6-1 and 6-2 scores in the next two sets to win the match at No. 4 singles.
Lee (8-5, 5-4 GSC) ended the shutout with Donaldson's three-set victory over Pinto at the fifth position. Donaldson held on to win the first set 7-5. Pinto forced a third set with a 6-2 margin in the second set before Donaldson completed the win with a 6-2 mark in the third set.
Kirr overcame a 6-0 loss in her first set with Foessmeier to win the next two sets 7-5 and 6-4 to win at No. 1 singles to pull the Lady Flames within one point at 3-2 with two matches still to be finished.
De La Torre won the first and third sets against Ujdur to clinch the win for AUM. Enderink edged Hayden Smith 7-5, 7-6 to supply the final team score.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to complete their regular season schedule with a trip to Clinton, Miss., on Thursday, April 15. The GSC match against Mississippi College is set to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
