Women's Tennis Downs Mississippi College 5-2 To Complete Regular Season

CLINTON, Miss. – The Lee University women's tennis team completed its regular season with a 5-2 win at Mississippi College Thursday afternoon.

"We really needed that win today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our girls just showed great heart. The number one attribute of this team is their fight. They are never out of any match and we had to really dig in and grind this one out."

The Lady Choctaws (6-6, 4-4 GSC) took the early 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles competition. Alisa Morozova and Kennedy Rodriguez defeated Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson 6-1 at No. 3 doubles. Matina Ujdur and Micaela Belen Maiz fell to Ely Alas and Fernanda Cota by the same score at the top position. Paulina Cota and Maria Rodriguez completed the sweep with a tie-break score of 7-5 to win at No. 2 doubles 7-6.

Sickinger put Lee (9-5, 6-4 GSC) on the board with a win at No. 4 singles. Sickinger cruised to a 6-0 score in the first set and but needed a 7-4 tiebreak to claim the second set 7-6.

Maiz gave the Lady Flames a 2-1 lead with matching 6-4 set scores against Alas. Fernanda Cota pulled Mississippi College even again with a three-set win over Ujdur. Ujdur won the opening set 6-4 and Cota forced a third set with a 7-6 (7-4) second set. Cota finished the No. 3 singles win with a 6-2 third set score.

Kirr overcame a 6-4 setback in her opening set with Paulina Cota with 6-4 marks in the second and third sets to put Lee back up 3-2 and within one point of securing the team win. Hayden Smith completed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles against McCarty.

Donaldson outlasted Kennedy Rodriguez at No. 5 singles to supply the final team score. Donaldson used a 7-5 tie-break to win the first set 7-6 and carried the momentum into a 6-0 shutout in the second set.

"Lisa played a fantastic match," added Hynes. "She is such a versatile player and is not afraid to change her game to find a way to win. Carley got us back into it with a good win and overall it was a really good team win today. Excited to get to Montgomery for the GSC Tournament next week.

The GSC Women's Tennis Championship is scheduled for April 22-24 at Lagoon Park and O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.
