LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Lee University softball team saw late-inning leads erased in a pair of Gulf South Conference losses Friday afternoon at West Alabama. The Lady Flames (13-18, 10-13 GSC) were defeated 7-5 and 5-4 in the doubleheader.
In the opener, Lee tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double by Laney Harris in the fourth inning and took a two-run lead in the sixth inning. The Tigers (15-18, 11-15 GSC) exploded for six runs in the sixth inning to grab a 7-3 advantage.
Lily Hatcher and Taylor De Adder went back-to-back with an RBI single and RBI triple with two outs to pull Lee within two in the top of the seventh. West Alabama recorded the final out to close the door on a Lee comeback.
Hatcher, De Adder and Harris recorded two hits each to combine for six of Lee's nine hits. Kayla Louie, Madison Richards and Shelby Cole each singled in the loss.
Madison Barnett started and pitched five innings. She gave up three runs, six hits and struck out three in the no decision. Gracie Leslie (3-5) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned), three hits and one walk in one inning pitched.
Kacy Noland gave up nine hits, five runs (three earned0 and struck out two Lee batters in seven innings to pick up the win.
The Lady Flames took a 1-0 lead on a Harris RBI single in the first inning of game two and added another run in the fourth following an RBI single by Kylie Bohl.
As in game one, the Tigers took advantage of a big inning to gain a late-inning lead. Chrissy Tubbs and Cassie Matlock singled to begin the innings and moved to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Noland. A sacrifice fly and a wild pitch evened the score at 2-2. Hannah Mynard smacked a three-run home run to give the home team a three-run lead.
In the sixth, Annalyn Ormsby scored on Bohl's groundout and Hatcher plated Cole to pull the Lady Flames to within one of UWA. The Lady Flames left runners at second and third to end the inning and were put down in order in the seventh.
De Adder and Bohl led the Lee offense with 2-for-3 performances in the nightcap. Cole was 1-for-2 with two runs scored.
De Adder (4-3) received the loss in the circle. She was charged with four runs on four hits, four walks and one strikeout in 4.2 innings pitched. Shonna Penney gave up one hit and one run, while striking out three in 1.1 innings.
Hannah Mynard earned the complete-game win. She allowed eight hits, four runs, walked four and struck out seven.
The Lady Flames and West Alabama are scheduled to complete the three-game series on Saturday at 3 p.m. EDT. Lee is currently in eighth place in the GSC, just ahead of West Alabama and Montevallo.
