Women's Lacrosse Wins Regular Season Finale

CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- The Lee University women's lacrosse team wrapped up their regular season with a, 17-7, win over Southern Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon from the Multi-Sport Complex on senior day.

Prior to the contest, Lee (9-3), honored their two seniors in Kaylyn Dillon and Emily Osborne.

Osborne scored the third goal of her career to go with three ground balls and a trio of caused turnovers. Dillon recorded one assist in the contest to go with a pair of ground balls.

Immediately after the ceremony the rout started. Avery Schenk scored the opening goal just a minute and a half into the contest and Shayna Ryan threw one in two minutes later from a Dillon assist to jump out to a quick two-goal lead.

Southern Wesleyan (4-9) quickly answered 26 seconds later with a Tabitha Beecher unassisted goal and the Lady Flames answered with a five-goal spurt of their own.

Dariana Blanton got the scoring started and Brittney White threw in two of her own for her 54th and 55th goals of the season. Blanton added one more and Giselle Gonzalez landed on the scoring sheet to push the lead to six.

The teams were even the rest of the half scoring two goals each allowing Lee to head into the break up, 9-6.

The second half started the same. The Lady Flames threw in two quick goals. Ryan found the back of the net just 23 seconds in from a Schenk pass and Blanton added to her goal total just 1:10 into the half.

The Warriors got one back with a Beecher goal to trim the lead to seven but it was all Lady Flames from there.

Lee rattled off six unanswered goals to get the mercy rule and put the game out of reach. Blanton and Ryan had a pair of goals each in the stretch while Osborne threw in her first goal of the season and Schenk ended the run with 16:04 remaining.

Wesleyan tried to answer but could only score three more goals in the final 16 minutes to make the final 17-7.

Lee dominated almost every statistical category outshooting the Warriors 44-14, putting more on goal (39-12), recording more ground balls (23-12), and winning the draw control battle 19-7.

Kelsey Hawkins and Beecher led Southern Wesleyan with two goals each and Jairy Sandoval and Kaeleigh McDaniel had four ground balls apiece to pace the visitors. McDaniel was also credited with three caused turnovers and Sandoval had five draw controls.

Despite giving up 17 goals McDaniel proved to be a tough keeper recording 22 saves on 39 shots on goal while getting tagged with the loss.

Blanton paced the field with six goals and Ryan wrapped up the hat trick scorers with four of her own. Blanton, Schenk, Osborne, and Jaylee Griffin all had three ground balls each and Osborne led the team causing three turnovers. White led all players with 12 draw controls.

Kaleigh Bernard went the whole contest in goal making five saves while allowing only seven goals to get credited with the win.

The Lady Flames will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Young Harris in the opening round of the Gulf South Conference Tournament at the Multi-Sport Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
