No. 17 UAH Sweeps Softball with 9-1 Win in Series Finale

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 17 Alabama Huntsville Chargers flexed their muscles on a sun-splashed Saturday afternoon and complete a three-game sweep of the Lee softball team with a 9-1 victory in five innings.

Lily Hatcher scored via a Charger error in the top of the first inning to give the Lady Flames a 1-0 lead but that advantage was short-lived as the Chargers scored nine unanswered runs.

UAH struck for two in the first on a double by Kierra Akles and a single from Mackenzie Nutt. Lila Young extended the lead on a inside the park home run in the fourth inning before Akles capped off a four RBI day with a three-run smash down the left field line. After a Lee pitching change Alaina Hampton made it back to back home runs as she capped off a five-run fourth with a solo shot to left field.

The Chargers closed out a disappointing three-game series for the Lady Flames with two runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded Ashley Cornell was hit by a pitch followed by a game ending RBI walk from Kelly Ann Sanders.

Akles (4-2) not only delivered at the plate she also went all five innings in the circle and gave up just one unearned run on three hits. She walked three and struck out a pair.

Madison Barnett (3-4) started for Lee and gave up six runs, three earned on eight hits over 3.1 innings. Shonna Penny finished off the fourth inning and allowed one run. Gracie Leslie retired one batter in the fifth before surrendering the final two runs to the Chargers.

The loss drops the Lady Flames to 9-15 on the year and 7-11 in the GSC. Lee has lost six in a row since sweeping Montevallo two weekends ago.  Alabama Huntsville improves to 20-7 and 15-6 in the GSC.

The Lady Flames will look to get back on track as they come home for a five-game homestand beginning on Wednesday with a doubleheader against King University starting at 3 p.m.
