Shayna Ryan Sets All-Time Assists Record As Lady Flames Tame Bearcats

LANDER, S.C. -- The Lee University women's lacrosse team took down Lander University, 20-8, Saturday afternoon from Van Taylor Stadium.

It was another game full of records for the young program as Shayna Ryan became the all-time assists leader with her help in the contest. Brittney White set the single-game goal and points record with 11 goals and three assists for 14 total points. Dariana Blanton had nine assists to set the single-game assist record in the one-sided affair.

Lander (3-4, 0-2 Gulf South Conference) scored the opening two goals of the contest but it was all Lady Flames from there. Lee (7-3, 3-0 GSC) rattled off the next nine goals over the next 26 minutes with four goals from White, three from Blanton, and one each from Sara-Kate Dixon and Audrey Dutton.

"We had to work hard today against a very tenacious Lander defense, and it took us a while to figure out which sets would work against them," said head coach Derrel Martin. "We seemed flat at the beginning, and let Lander force some turnovers."

The Bearcats got one back with 1:48 left in the half but the guests answered with two more goals with under a minute remaining to go up, 11-3, at the break.

The second half started much like the first with the hosts throwing in the first two goals to cut the lead to six. Lee responded outscoring Lander 9-3 in the final 20 minutes to claim the contest 20-8.

"Brittney White kept us in the game with her efforts on the draw. Her cuts were timely today which opened her up for many shots on goal," noted Martin.

White led all scorers with nine goals and Blanton threw in four of her own to round out the hat tricks for the Lady Flames. Ryan, Dutton, Dixon, Kelsey McGowen, and Jamie Small all had one goal each. Blanton led all players with nine assists and White dished out three of her own. Kaleigh Bernard paced the squad with four and Avery Schenk had three. White came out on top with nine draw controls while Ryan pitched in with six and Shannon Galloway had five.

"Kaleigh Bernard was solid in goal, making good decisions on her clears which helped us in transition," continued Martin.

Bernard went the entire match in goal making nine saves while only allowing eight goals to pick up the win.

Alyssa Suchan led Lander with four goals and Emmy Peterson had two assists. Jenny Tellez came away with four ground balls while Suchan picked up four draw controls.

Brenah Sarell made 12 saves while giving up 20 goals in 60 minutes of action.

Lee led in almost every statistical category having an advantage in shots (38-20), shots on goal (32-17), ground balls (17-16), and dominated the draw control winning 23 out of the 30 draws while forcing 15 Lander turnovers.

"Lander had some good attack players that shoot hard, but our team defense adjusted well and kept them off-balance." Martin concluded, "This was a tiring weekend since we played twice in two days, but we fought hard and put ourselves ahead in the conference standings. We will be resting and working on our game this week so we can be ready to finish up our conference schedule."

The Lady Flames wrap up conference play next Sunday, April 11 as they host the University of Alabama in Huntsville at the new Multi-Sport Complex beginning at 2 p.m.
