Men's Golf Ends Historic Season with Loss in National Championship Quarterfinals

Coach Maupin and Evan Spence embrace on the 18th green.
PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 8 Lee men's golf team saw its historic season come to an end on Thursday with a 4-1 loss to the University of Indianapolis in the NCAA D2 National Championship Quarterfinal Match Play Round. The event was staged at the beautiful PGA National Champion Course.

Oliver Lewis-Perkins got the Flames going in the right direction early as he opened the quarterfinals with a six-stroke lead over individual National Champion, Keegan Bronnenberg after 10 holes. The lead was chipped away heading into with Bronnenberg completing the comeback on the 18th hole to win by a stroke. UINDY would take a 2-0 lead as Connor Pollman fell to Cam Carroll by eight strokes.

Dustin DeMersseman gave the Flames their lone victory with a six-stroke win over Ian Carroll. Senior Evan Spence wrapped up a fantastic five-year career as he lost to Erik Edwards by two and Beck Burnette was defeated by O. Mast by one stroke.

"We couldn't  have asked for a better start for us today," said Lee Director of Golf, John  Maupin. "I love the way we came out and competed. It felt like we ere in control of the match all day, and just had some untimely big numbers late that ended up making the difference."

Maupin went on to talk about the play of his senior leader, "Evan Spence has been as good a leader as we've ever had in this program. It was emotional for me to watch him play his final hole in a Lee uniform. He represents all the things we want our program to be about...intregrity, selflessness, and in elite work ethic. He's as good as they come."

The Greyhounds would advance to the semifinals in the afternoon and lost to Georgia Southwestern 2-2-1 via the second tiebreaker, which was the result of the first match. Georgia Southwestern will matchup with Arkansas Tech in the National Championship Final tomorrow morning. Arkansas Tech claimed a 3-1-1 victory over West Florida.

The Flames advanced to the National Championship for the first time in program history after claiming the South Region Championship on May 8. Lee qualified for the Match Play round after an eighth place finish in the 54-hole stroke play portion of the tournament, Monday-Wednesday.

"This team helped push our program to new heights this season, and I'm incredibly proud of them. I think anyone associated with Lee University should be very of how these young men represented our school all season. I believe that you'll see our team back on this stage again soon," said Maupin.
