PENSACOLA, Florida – In its first trip ever to the NCAA DII South Regional Tournament, the Flames had to settle for a third-place finish after falling to host West Florida on Saturday evening, 7-0. Lee finishes the 2021 season with a 37-10 record.
The final 7-0 margin does not do justice to the pitching performance of Chandler Ring (4-1). The sophomore right-hander pitched 8.1 innings and scattered 10 hits. He allowed three earned runs, struck out six and walked one. Andy Rivera ran into some hard luck in the top of the inning and allowed three earned runs. Lefty Nate Dupree came in for .2 inning.
"What an awesome year by this group. It didn't end the way we wanted it to, but a regular season (GSC) Conference Championship, first NCAA regional bid, and first wins at a regional made this a pretty special run. These seniors have left a mark on our program and something we can continue to build on," said Coach Mark Brew after Saturday's loss.
It was a strange evening from start to finish. Thomas Zazzaro picked up Lee's only hit in the bottom of the first inning. Justen Freeman was hit by a pitch and the Flames appeared to be in business. A check swing by Alan Smith resulted in a double play and quickly let West Florida pitcher Josh Pahlad off the hook.
Pahlad (3-0) was making his first start of the season. He proceeded to pitch one-hit ball, striking out nine and issuing one free pass in going the entire nine innings. The Argonauts were led by Cullan O'Shea. He had three hits including a double and a three-run homer. Miller Hancock had a pair of hits, an RBI and scored twice. Dylan Menhennett doubled and collected an RBI. Sam Clement and Jason Roberts had two knocks apiece. Roberts, who came on as a pinch-hitter, also doubled.
West Florida will face Tampa University in Sunday's final. The Argonauts would need two wins to claim the title against the unbeaten Spartans.
