Strong Second Half Fuels Lady Flames Win At AUM

MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Lee University women's basketball team began the 2022 portion of the schedule with a 79-70 win against Auburn University at Montgomery in the AUM Athletics Complex.

The 25th-ranked Lady Flames improved to 11.3 overall and 4-2 in Gulf South Conference action. AUM dropped to 5-6 and are now 0-5 against conference opponents.

Lee was led offensively by Haley Schubert. The senior was 6-for-20 from the field and converted 9-of-11 free throw attempts on her way to a game-high 22 points. She also dished out seven assists to go with four blocked shots and two steals.

Julia Duncan and Halle Hughes were the only other Lady Flames to reach double figures in scoring. Duncan made 5-of-14 shots and was a perfect 6-for-6 at the charity stripe to contribute 17 points. Hughes was 3-for-6 from behind the arc and finished with 15 points.

Overall, Lee made 26-of-65 (.400) from the field, including 8-of-22 (.364) 3-pointers. The Lady Flames took 24 trips to the free throw line and made 19 (.792). AUM was 23-for-55 (.418) and made 8-of-20 (.400) 3-point attempts. The Warhawks were 16-for-23 (.696) at the free throw line.

Lee edged their hosts 39-37 in the battle of the boards. The Lady Flames turned 15 offensive rebounds into 11 second-chance points, while AUM tallied 14 second-chance points off 10 offensive boards.

AUM was led by Catlin Carter's 16 points. She added five assists, four rebounds, one block and one steal. Allasha Dudley supplied 14 points and Tamia Willingham-King contributed another 12. Dudley grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Kailyn Farrell recorded nine points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Lady Flames jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter before AUM fought back to lead 18-15 after the first 10 minutes. The Lady Warhawks outscored Lee 16-14 in the second quarte to build a five-point halftime lead.

Lee closed the gap in the third quarter, outscoring AUM 24-19 to tie the game at 53-53 with one quarter remaining. AUM took a quick two-point lead in the final quarter before layups by Anna Muhonen and Schubert gave Lee a 57-55 lead with 8:35 remaining.

The Lady Flames maintained a slim advantage until Dudley nailed a 3-pointer to put the Warhawks ahead 65-64 with 2:37 still on the clock. Over the next two minutes, Lee went on a 13-2 run to build a 10-point lead with 24 seconds left.

The Lady Flames travel to Rome, Georgia to face Shorter University on Thursday, January 6. The GSC contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the Winthrop-King Centre.
