LIVINGSTON, Alabama – After falling behind 18-6 in the first quarter and trailing 18-9 at the end of the first frame, the Lee women went on a 17-2 run and led at the end of the first half 28-25. They never trailed again in posting a 60-47 victory over host University of West Alabama in Pruitt Hall on Saturday afternoon.
The win improved the Lady Flames to 8-2 in GSC play and 15-3 overall. They also closed out a tough three-game road swing with three victories and will carry a five-game winning streak into a home date next Thursday against Shorter University (6 p.m.). West Alabama drops to 6-4, 12-6.
"This was really a quality road win for our team. West Alabama jumped all over us early and I'm proud of how we kept our composure and responded," praised Lee coach Marty Rowe. "Road wins in this league mean a lot, especially against a real good team. We have to keep working to get better every game. There is still much room for improvement on both ends of the court for our team."
Defense was the name of the game. Lee held the Lady Tigers to only 36% shooting from the field and 18% from long range. Tazsa Garrett-Hammet, who averages over 15 points per game, was held to just six. Bria Dent paced the losers with a double-double, 19 points and 12 rebounds.
It was not a great shooting afternoon for the Lee offense. They shot 37% from the field (22-of-60), 33% from beyond the arc (3-of-9) and made 13-of-17 free throws. Lee outscored the rugged Lady Tiers 34-26 in points in the paint and tallied 13 to only three for West Alabama in second-chance points.
The Lady Flames went to the glass for 40 rebounds. Halle Hughes had nine boards to go along with seven points. Hannah Garrett produced a solid game with 12 points and nine rebounds. Cam Grant pulled down eight boards and contributed seven points. Haley Schubert led the Lee scoring with 17 points and dished off five assists while Julia Duncan joined Schubert and Garrett in double figures with 11 points.
