Volleyball Sweeps the Weekend with a 3-0 Win over the Wolves

The Lee volleyball Lady Flames made it two straight Gulf South Conference victories with a hard-fought 3-0 sweep of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon from Walker Arena.

Lee jumped ahead with a 28-26 win in set one thanks to a Brooke Bini kill and West Georgia attack error to close it out. In set two the Lady Flames overcame a 13-7 deficit to win 25-20. Lee scored the final four points on a slam by Abby Stroh, ace by Clarissa Soza, and back to back kills by Scottie Cook.

With the Walker Arena crowd on their feet the Lady Flames finished off the weekend sweep with a 25-22 victory in set three with Stroh slamming it home for the match winner.

The middle attack shined for the Lady Flames with Grace Mazzocca and Cook providing eight kills each and on an identical .538 hitting percentage. Stroh added seven kills and Sophia Lippert had six. Ashton Middleton did a little bit of everything as she posted 24 assists, 11 digs and six aces.

"It was important for us to get our middle's going and they really showed up today," said Interim Head Coach Silvia Beauzile. "That allowed us to not have our pins take so many swings and kept them fresh."

When asked about her junior setter, Ashton Middleton, Beauzile had high praise for the transfer from Berry College, "Ashton is such a good leader and teammate. She is always working hard and supporting her teammates. She brings a lot of poise and calmness to our team when she is out on the course. She's also devoted a lot of time to working on her defense and both her and Clarissa were active in that phase of the game today."

Zoe LaBreche led the Wolves with 14 kills and hits .379 on 29 total attacks. Autumn Mayes had 24 assists and 16 digs.

"I try and have fun out there on the court," said Middleton. "I've learned that I play my best when I make sure that I'm enjoying the game and playing loose. I've really put in some extra time in practice getting to know my teammates and trying to get on the same page within from a timing standpoint. I think we are starting to see some of that pay off. It's so exciting to play in front of a loud and engaged home crowd. We really fed off their energy tonight."

The Lady Flames improve to 4-14 on the year and more importantly get two big GSC victories this weekend to move to 2-4 in the league. The Wolves fall to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the GSC.

Lee will head on the road next week for a three-game road trip. The Lady Flames visit Valdosta State, who they just played on Friday, this Tuesday at 6 p.m. Lee will tangle with Auburn Montgomery on Friday at 4 p.m. and wrap up the road trip with West Florida on Saturday at 3 p.m.
