Lady Flames Shutout Tigers, 1-0 at annual Kickin' It For Kid's with Cancer Match

Grace Berry scored early and the Lee women's soccer team made it stick in claiming a 1-0 Gulf South Conference victory over West Alabama on Friday night at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

Berry received a ball from Tatum Miller and powered a shot off the left post and in to give the Lady Flames the early advantage. Berry, a freshman from Huntsville, Ala., is now second the team in goals with seven. Miller tallied her second assist of the season.

The Lady Flames dominated the possession and contest in the first half, outshooting the Tigers, 11-0. The second half was a more balanced contest with each team tallying two shots. Josie Taylor kept the clean sheet, thanks in large part to the effort of her defenders and defensive midfielders. West Alabama's Maria Mon was the losing keeper and finished with four saves.

The Lady Flames hosted their 15th annual Kickin It for Kid's with Cancer match to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation. The mission of the foundation is to erase the effects of pediatric cancer and optimize each child's quality of life through essential specialized intervention beginning at the time of diagnosis and continuing throughout survivorship.

"This is always such a special night for our team," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "Our girls get the opportunity to spend some time and encourage these precious kids and their families. Olivia Weatherford has served as our honorary captain over the last several years as she has fought her battle with cancer, and she was able to FaceTime with the girls before the game and that she continues to inspire us with her courage and strength."

The Lady Flames improve to 9-2-5 overall and 7-2-3 in the GSC. West Alabama drops to 9-5-1 and 8-3-1 in league play.

"We had a lot of different players step up and contribute to this win," added Hennessey. "I was really proud of our effort and intensity, particularly in the first half. West Alabama is well coached and have had a good season, we knew we would need to play well to win and we accomplished that goal."

Lee currently sits in fifth place with 24 conference points, one back of West Alabama. The top four teams will host the GSC Quarterfinals on Sunday, Oct. 30.

The Lady Flames will wrap up the regular season on Sunday afternoon as they square off with Alabama Huntsville at 1 p.m.
