ROME, Georgia – It took the Lee women's basketball team less than 48 hours to rebound from a Saturday loss to Alabama Huntsville and pin an 83-54 defeat on host Shorter University. The Monday makeup game win improved the Lady Flames to 18-4 overall and 12-3 in GSC play.
"It was a great way to bounce back. I thought we competed really hard on both ends of the court and our bench came in and gave us big lifts in key situations," explained Lee Head Coach Marty Rowe. "We still have room for growth over this stretch run and that will be the focus over the next two weeks."
Lee will head to Valdosta State for a key
meeting with the second-place Blazers on Thursday and remain on the road to try an avenge an earlier loss to West Florida on Saturday. Valdosta currently stands at 14-2 in the conference standings and West Florida 12-5.
Hannah Garrett made 7-of-11 shots overall from the floor and 6-of-9 triples to pace the Lee scoring with 21 points. Halle Hughes converted 5-of-6 shots she attempted for 13 points. She pulled down four rebounds and was listed with three assists.
Five Lady Flames finished in double-figure scoring. Haley Schubert tossed in 10 and added three assists. Macy Woodworth made the best of 10 minutes of action with 11 points and three boards while Micah Black nailed a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a 10-point game.
It was a 20-15 contest after the first period, but Lee put the battle away by outscoring the Hawks 23-12 in the second period, gaining the 43-27 lead and never looking back to rest of the afternoon. The Lady Flames shot a solid 57% from the field and 44% from beyond the arc. They were awarded 8 freebies and made 10. Shorter was held to 38% shooting and just 27% from 3-point range. However, they were given 17 free throws and knocked 14.
Tiara Lewis had 16 points and seven rebounds to pace the Hawks. Azaria Howard followed with 10 markers while Ansley Barge hit a pair of triples and totaled 10 points. Lee won the rebounding battle 27-22 and the Lady Flames turned the ball over 13 times while forcing Shorter into 18 floor mistakes.
