Carson-Newman Eagles Walk Past Flames, 12-7

Visiting Carson-Newman took advantage of 11 walks and two hit batters in posting a 12-7 victory over the Lee baseball team at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. It was the ninth straight road victory for the Eagles who improved to 15-10 overall. The Flames dropped to 11-12.

"Unfortunately, our strike-throwing got us in trouble again tonight," said Coach Mark Brew after the loss. "Carson-Newman was able to capitalize on those freebies to get the big (6th) inning and kept extending the lead.  I thought (freshman) Landon Maynor did a nice job on the back end (9th).

All totaled, Lee used eight pitchers and Kade Kozak was charged with the loss. The Eagles sent four hurlers to the mound and Matt Coles worked four innings and was credited with the pitching win.

The Eagles moved on top 3-1 after two innings and increased the margin to 4-1 before the Flames rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3. After Carson-Newman scored again in the fifth, Lee countered with two runs in the bottom of the same inning to finally tie the game at five.

The wheels came off for the Lee pitching in the sixth inning and the Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate and put five runs on the board, with the help of seven free passes and only one hit in the frame. Carson-Newman added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings to walk away with the victory.

Both teams had eight hits. The Flames were led by Cam Suto who was 2-of-5 with a home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, a single and two RBI.  "Suto continues to get more comfortable at the plate," remarked Coach Brew in talking about the freshman from Marietta, Georgia.

Jake Edwards added a pair of singles and knocked in a run. Nate Bynum tripled and scored while Riley Majano, Dylan Standifer, Brandon Daniels, and Adam Goolsby had one hit apiece and scored Lee's other runs.

Gunnar Ricketts ripped a double that plated three big runs for Carson-Newman. Andrew Carpenter also had a two-base hit and collected two RBI. Spencer Williams drew a couple of walks and collected two RBI. Harrison Travis had two hits and drove in a run while Zach Boze and Micah Genter had the other hits and RBIs.

"We've got to get back to work in practice, but more importantly get our minds cleared before a tough series at Mississippi College this weekend," concluded Coach Brew. Friday's single nine-inning game in Clinton, Mississippi is slated for a 7 p.m. while Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch.
