No. 15 Men's Tennis Takes Down Christian Brothers 6-1

The Lee University men's tennis team ended a two-game skid with a 6-1 victory over Christian Brothers University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The win was the 15th-ranked Flames first win in Gulf South Conference action as they improved to 1-2 within the conference and 7-3 overall.

CBU (5-10, 1-5 GSC) grabbed the early advantage with a 6-2 win by Javier Flores and Ignacio Mora over Jordi Dasi and Diego Garcia at No. 2 doubles. The No. 32 doubles team of Nico Ramirez and Bruno Medeiros pulled Lee even with an 6-2 score against Seth Macute and Alonso Reid at No. 1 doubles. Drew Johnston and Wihan Van Der Merwe secured the doubles point for Lee after defeating Jojo Sandoz and Alban Piranda 6-1.

Dasi dropped just three games in winning his No. 2 singles match with Reid. Ramirez, ranked No. 25, handed Flores a 6-4, 6-2 defeat at No. 1 singles to push the Lee lead to 3-0. Garcia secured the team win with matching 6-2 set scores in a straight-set win over Sandoz.

Van Der Merwe beat Piranda 6-3 and 6-2 to continue Lee's streak. Johnston extended the Lee advantage to 6-0 with a three-set win over Mora at No. 5 singles. Johnston won the first set 6-1 and Mora grabbed the second set by a 7-5 margin. Johnston outscored Mora 10-4 in the superset tiebreaker to collect the team point.

Emilian Zavala ended Lee's shutout hopes with a three-set win over Denis Muratovic at No. 6 singles. Muratovic won the first set 6-2 then fell 8-6 in the second-set tiebreaker. They played the third set as a superset tiebreaker where Zavala recorded a 10-3 win.

The Flames are scheduled to take on Shorter University on Monday in Rome, Georgia. The GSC contest is set for 1 p.m. EDT.
