White's OT Goal Lifts Lady Flames Past Lander in GSC Thriller

In one the most thrilling games you'll ever see Brittney White fired home the golden goal in overtime to give the Lee women's lacrosse a 13-12 victory over Lander on Sunday afternoon at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.

White's game-winner came after a crucial defensive stop to start overtime by the Lady Flames as Megan Trout picked up the ground ball off a Lander turnover. After successfully clearing, Lee called a timeout which set the stage for White's heroics. White had two goals, tallied two ground balls, and added to her GSC-lead in draw controls with eight.

"We ran a play that we like to go to in one-on-one situations where we need to score quick. I thought Megan (Trout) was going to set a pick, but she did a great job of driving by to draw the defense towards her and that gave me the space to go for the goal. So, I give her a lot of credit" said a smiling White after win. "Our defense is amazing, and they bring the energy, and they got the big stops when we needed it."

Dariana Blanton and Caleigh Kenna led the Lady Flames with four goals each. Blanton also added a pair of assists and leads the GSC in goals (36) and points (45) on the year.

Shayna Ryan scored both of her goals in the fourth quarter as the Lady Flames came back from down twice in the final quarter. The back-and-forth battle was played within a two-goal margin the entire match.

Lee took a 12-11 lead with 1:29 left in regulation as Kenna scored her fourth goal of the contest. Lander earned the draw control off a foul however and tallied the tying score with just 18 seconds left in the game by Lauren Fallow, playing a player up after a Lee yellow card.

Fallow, Emma Arifin and Mickey Burnett led the Bearcats with three goals each. Emmy Peterson tallied two and Alyssa Suchan also found the back of the net. Brenah Sarell posted nine saves for Lander in goal.

"We got a huge stop on defense in overtime and Megan (Trout) ran it up to set things up for Britt (White). We've been working all week on bringing intensity to each game, especially in conference play. It was neck and neck all day and that's what we like, and it was healthy competition," said Lee Assistant Coach Megan Smith.

Kaleigh Bernard earned the win in goal for Lee as she posted 10 saves. As a team the Lady Flames scooped up 21 groundballs and caused nine turnovers. Jaylee Giffin caused two turnovers and had four groundballs.

Lander held a 34-29 advantage in shots but both teams placed 22 on mark. Each club managed 21 ground balls, but the Flames held a distinct edge in draw controls at 19-9.

This was the first overtime victory in the history of the Lee women's lacrosse program. Lee had been 0-3 in overtime prior today's victory over Lander.

With the win Lee moves even to 5-5 on the year and takes over first place in the GSC at 2-0. The loss drops Lander to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in league action.

The Lady Flames will continue their three-game home stand on Wednesday as the welcome No. 23 Embry-Riddle to the Ray Conn Sports Complex for a matinee affair. Opening draw is slated for 2 p.m.

In addition to a big win on the field it was also a special day for off the field as the Lady Flames partnered with Headstong organization, which helps raise funds and support for families affected by cancer. The players braid their hair each game in support of the organization and to honor people they know that are fighting against cancer.

"Many people know my story, I'm a cancer survivor and my father passed away from cancer so we, along with many other lacrosse teams, have partnered with Headstrong to raise awareness and money to help them in their fight against cancer. We're really happy to join forces with Headstrong to help families affected by cancer," concluded Smith.
