ROME, Ga. – The Lee University women's tennis team ended a four-game skid with a 6-1 defeat of Shorter University Monday afternoon at the Walt Attaway Tennis Complex.
The Lady Flames (4-7, 2-3 GSC) swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Micaela Belen Maiz and Lisa Kirr beat Izabel Nikolaeva and Alana Mulkey 6-1 at No. 1 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Sierra Donaldson were 6-1 winners over Maria Martinez and Andrea Medel. Lauren Trammell and Mirjana Ragastovac completed the clean sweep with a 6-3 margin over Emma Novis and Kyndall Moore.
Kirr recorded matching sets of 6-1 to defeat Medel to open singles competition and push the Lee advantage to 2-0. Nikolaeva cut Shorter's deficit in half with an upset win (6-3, 6-4) over Simes, ranked No. 40, at No. 1 singles.
Belen Maiz took down Martinez 6-2 and 6-4 to regain the momentum. Trammell blanked Novis at No. 5 singles and Hayden Smith did the same at No. 6 singles against Emma Gallman. Donaldson completed the scoring with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Mulkey at No. 4 singles.
"It's nice to get a win at Shorter," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We'll get back and start working toward West Alabama on Friday."
The Lady Flames return to action on Friday with a trip to Livingston, Alabama to challenge No. 14 University of West Alabama. First serve is set for 11 a.m. EDT.
