The Lee University women's tennis team upset No. 49 Mississippi College 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. With the win the Lady Flames improved to 5-8 overall and 3-4 in Gulf South Conference action. Mississippi College fell to 10-2 (3-2 GSC).
"Our ladies played a great match, so proud of this win," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "That was definitely the best doubles we've played this year. When we decide to fight like this, anything's possible for this team. Just a complete team performance today against a really good squad."
Lisa Kirr and Micaela Belen Maiz opened doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Elyangelica Alas and Fernanda Cota at No. 1 doubles. Ashleigh Simes and Sierra Donaldson defeated Anna Didkovska and Anna Valiaeva 6-3 to secure the doubles point. Mirjana Ragastovac and Lauren Trammell completed the sweep with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Emma Roberts and Maria Rodriguez.
Simes, ranked No. 41, pushed Lee ahead 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Alas at No. 1 singles. Belen Maiz took down Cota 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and Kirr clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-4 decision against Roberts.
"Great win for Lisa, she has had a few setbacks this year. But she stepped up and delivered when we really needed it," added Hynes.
Ragastovac defeated Valiaeva 6-3 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Cota ended Lee's shutout hopes with a 6-2, 6-3 win against Trammell. Donaldson supplied the final margin with a three-set win over Didkovska. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Donaldson won the next two sets 6-2 and 10-4.
The Lady Flames remain home to face Auburn Montgomery on Friday for the second of four-straight home matches to end the regular season. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
