VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lee University men's tennis team had its six-match win streak snapped in a 5-2 loss to No. 2 Valdosta State University at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Flames are now 6-2 overall and 0-2 in Gulf South Conference action, while the Blazers are 4-3 with a 2-0 conference mark.
Rodrigo Carvalho and Christian Wedel beat Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston 6-1 to open doubles competition. Bruno Medeiros and Nico Rodriguez defeated Edward Etty and Luca Mack 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Lamar Bartley and Christian Felline secured the doubles point for VSU with a 6-3 win over Jordi Dasi and Diego Garcia.
Cameron Trigolos opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Johnston at the sixth position. Swann Flohr pushed VSU's lead to 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 scored against Van Der Merwe. Luca Mack, ranked No. 12, held on to post a 7-4 tiebreaker score in his second set with Ramirez to complete the two-set win at No. 1 singles and clinch the team victory.
Dasi and Garcia claimed three-set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Dasi won the first set 6-2, lost the second 6-3 and gave Lee its first point with a 6-3 advantage in the third set. Garcia lost his opening set 7-5 to No. 29 Carvalho. He forced a third set with a 7-5 second-set tiebreaker and finished the comeback with a 10-3 superset score.
Wedel supplied the final team score with a three-set defeat of Medeiros. Medeiros used a tiebreaker score of 7-5 to win the opening set 7-6, but Wedel won the next two sets by 6-2 and 6-4 tallies.
The Flames travel to Daytona Beach, Florida for a non-conference match with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Tuesday. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
