You won't see many innings like the Lee softball team put up in the first inning of an impressive 11-3 victory over No. 12 Auburn Montgomery on Sunday afternoon to earn a Gulf South Series win.
The Lady Flames sent 13 batters to the plate and scored nine runs on six hits. Four the six hits were extra base hits and 8 of the 9 runs were scored with two outs. Bre Patton led off the game in style with a home run to center and later doubled in two more runs to account for three RBI and two hits in the first inning.
Sidney Lee drilled a two-run double to center to make it 4-0. After Patton's double made it 6-0, speedster Ana Macha tripled home to more runs to push the advantage to 8-0. The final run of the offensive outburst scored via a double steal as De Adder swiped second and Macha raced home.
Lee completed the scoring and posted her fifth RBI of the day with two-run double in the second. The Lady Flames finished with eight hits as Patton, Macha, Ormsby and Lee each two hits.
The nine runs in the first was more than enough for the Lee starter Nyah Vogel (5-4). She worked the first three innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Madison Barnett finished the final two frames and allowed a run on four hits.
"What a start to a game. After the first two pitches we got two hits and a run. Today was a product of things we talked about during our series with Union. This series they were challenged to believe what they couldn't see and to have a vision for what they're capable of," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. Bre started us off with a bang and we ran from there. Sid Lee had a big day at the plate and worked hard for the pitcher behind the plate. Nyah started well and Barnett closed the door."
Morgan Ferguson took the loss for the Warhawks as the visitors had to use three pitchers to get out of the first inning.
Chloe Derric hit a two-run homer to right help the Warhawks avoid the shutout in the third. Gia Martin added the other Warhawk run on a single to right in the fifth.
The Lady Flames have now won 4 of 5 and improve to 9-10 overall and 3-5 in the GSC. The Warhawks fall to 14-5 and 4-2 in league action.
Lee will get back on the diamond as it visits Bristol, Tenn. for midweek twin bill on Wednesday starting at 1 p.m.
