Lady Flames Lose 6-1 At Valdosta State

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Lee University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Valdosta State University Saturday morning at the VSU Tennis Complex. The Lady Flames fell to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. The Blazers improved to 3-5, 2-0 GSC.

Elisa Beau and Magda Tuells Bonet defeated Hayden Smith and Lauren Trammell 6-1 to begin doubles competition. Julia Saving and Hera Bjork edged Lisa Kirr and Larissa Wieser 6-4, while Rachelle Starreveld and Natalie Kohoutkova outlasted Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur 7-5 to sweep doubles and take a 1-0 lead.

Adriana Barrio was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Smith at No. 6 singles. Starreveld lost just two points to Trammell at No. 5 singles to push the VSU advantage to 3-0. Anastasiia Vorobiova posted a 7-5 first set score against Ujdur and trailed 2-1 in the second set when Ujdur was forced to retire. The result at No. 3 singles clinched the team victory.

Simes needed three sets to beat Kohoutkova at No. 1 singles and end VSU's hopes for a shutout. Simes opened the match with a 6-3 win before dropping the second set 7-5. The final set was played as a superset. Simes recorded the win with a 10-3 mark.

Valdosta State would claim the final two singles matches to provide the final team margin. Bonet beat Kirr 6-3 and 6-1, while Beau needed three sets to beat Mirjana Ragastovac at No. 4 singles. Ragastovac won the middle set 7-5 after losing the opening set 6-4. Beau posted a 10-6 superset tiebreaker for the win.

The Lady Flames travel to Daytona Beach, Florida for a non-conference match with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Tuesday. First serve is set for 3:30 p.m.
