ROME, Ga. – The Lee softball team took advantage of 10 walks and three errors to take down Shorter, 5-3 in series opener on Friday evening.
The Lady Flames managed just two hits in the contest but drew 10 walks and struck for three runs in the first and two in the seventh. Sidney Lee singled up the middle to score two in the first after Ana Macha scored the first run via a Hawks' error.
Shorter chipped away with a run in the first, two more in the fifth to tie things up at three before the Lady Flames took the lead in the seventh. Combs singled in a run in the first, Sewell drilled a solo shot in the fifth and Cecere tallied the final run as she came home off a Lee error.
Nyah Vogel (11-6) earned the win in the circle for the Lady Flames. She tossed four innings and gave up two runs, one earned on four hits. Madison Barnett registered her second save of the season with three solid innings of relief. She allowed just one unearned run on one hit.
"We found a way to win today, and we talked about things we want to work on for tomorrow. Madison Barnett came in and gave us a few good innings until we could push some more runs across. This is a tough conference, and any win is a good one. Especially on the road," noted Lee head coach Emily Russell.
Brunson (1-11) took the loss in the circle for the Hawks. She allowed just two hits over 6.2 innings but walks and errors loomed large. Brunson surrendered 10 free passes and allowed five runs but just one was earned due to three ill-timed Shorter errors. Pettigrew came on in relief to get the final out of the top of the seventh via strikeout.
The Lady Flames improve to 17-14 and 10-8 in the GSC. The loss drops Shorter to 4-30 and 1-17 in league play.
The two teams will wrap up the GSC weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.
