GREENVILLE, Miss. – The Lee University women's tennis team clinched a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament with a 6-3 win over Delta State University Saturday afternoon at Cypress Hills Tennis Club. The Lady Flames complete the regular season with a 6-10 overall record and garnered one of the final two spots in the GSC postseason with a 4-6 conference mark.
Lee opened doubles competition with Lisa Kirr and Micaela Belen Maiz blanking Alena Macharova and Lavinia Horning 6-0. Delta State (3-9, 1-7 GSC) evened the doubles score with a 6-3 win by Sofia Pepe and Maria Caride against Mirjana Ragastovac and Lauren Trammell. Ashleigh Simes and Sierra Donaldson secured the doubles point with a 7-5 score against Marie Guillaume and Adriana Subias.
Simes, ranked No. 29, shut out Macharova 6-0 and 6-0 to put Lee up 2-0. Belen Maiz dropped just two points to Gillaume to win their No. 2 singles match in straight sets.
Horning ending Lee's streak with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Donaldson. Kirr regained the momentum and clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Pepe. Ragastovac won the first and third sets of her three-set win over Subias by 6-1 scores to put Lee ahead 5-1.
Caride supplied the final margin with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Trammell at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Flames will now wait to see what seeding they will receive for the upcoming GSC Tournament which will be held April 28-30 at Lagoon Park and O'Connor Tennis Center in Montgomery, Alabama. Lee is currently in eighth place and can move into seventh if Mississippi College loses at AUM on Sunday.
