Miguel Alba pitched a complete nine-inning game, striking out 12 and allowing just four hits in leading Lee to a 3-1 victory over Christian Brothers University at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The win completed a three-game sweep of the Bucs and improved the Flames to 22-19 overall and 13-10 in the GSC standings.
"It is always tough to sweep in the GSC," commented Lee coach Mark Brew. "I am super proud of the team. Our defense was excellent all weekend and turned a huge double play in the 9th. Alba had his best stuff of the year and turned in a tremendous performance."
Lee jumped on top 1-0 in the first inning when Thomas Zazzaro walked, went to second on a single by Dylan Standifer and advanced to third when Brandon Daniels was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Jared Demkowicz delivered a one-base hit that plated Zazzaro.
The Flames scored their other two runs in the fourth inning. Matthew Batts hit a long homer over the right-field wall. Luke Hughes was hit by a pitch and scored when Nate Bynum hit into a double-play.
Christian Brothers tallied their only score in the top of the eighth inning. Jamarion White was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a single by Van True. Ben Brocato, Kelton Castillo and Andrew Baldelli had the Bucs other hits, all one-base knocks.
Alba (4-2) pitched a complete nine-game for the first time this year. He fired 120 pitches and at one point set down 13 of the 15 batters he faced. He walked only two CBU batters and hit one other man. A double-play ball in the ninth inning helped end a final threat by the Bucs.
Lee's nine-hit attack was led by Issac Quinones who was a perfect 3-of-3. Standifer had a triple and a single while Zazzaro singled, Daniels doubled, Demkowicz knocked in a run with his hit and Batts went deep.
Garrett Dooley started and pitched well for the losers. In seven innings he surrendered nine hits and three earned runs. He fanned nine and walked one. Joseph Gibson pitched one inning and struck out all three batters he faced.
The Flames will return to action on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and will face Emmanuel College in a single nine-inning game slated for Larry Carpenter Stadium and Olympic Field.
