Lady Flames Battle Back From Slow Start to Defeat AUM 64-57

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – After falling behind by nine points in the second quarter, Lee came alive with the help of a pair of 3-point goals by Kara Williams and tied the GSC contest at 31 by halftime against the host University of Auburn at Montgomery on Friday evening.

The Lady Flames regrouped and quickly got out of the gate in the third quarter and outscored the Warhawks 15-8. They led at the end of the third frame 46-39. The lead grew to 11 points but AUM would not go away, cutting the Lee lead to four points before falling 64-57.

The Lady Flames posted their seventh straight victory and improved to 7-2 overall, remaining unbeaten in conference play with a 6-0 record. The Warhawks dropped to 6-5, 4-3. Lee returns home and will host Shorter University in their final game before the Christmas break on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. Admission is free to all thanks to Food City.

The balanced Lee attack was paced by Williams, who tallied 13 points and made 3-of-5 treys. Mallory Hampton, Haylee Jo Johnson and Keira Leffew had 10 points each. Hampton also had six assists. Leffew pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in 15 minutes of playing time and Johnson added four assists.

Overall the Lady Flames had 18 assists compared to 12 turnovers against an aggressive AUM defense. Mia Hurst drew praise from Coach Marty Rowe with seven points, five rebounds and five assists. Anna Muhonen came on with a strong second half, tallying six points and six rebounds.

Allasha Dudley had an outstanding game for the Warhawks, scoring 28 points and totaling four rebounds. Danielle Luckey battled on the glass for 11 rebounds and totaled eight points. AUM outrebounded the Lady Flames 42-35 and collected 19 offensive boards.

For the game, Lee shot 47% from the floor (27-of-58) and 35% from 3-point range. They were awarded only eight free throws and made four. On the other hand, the Warhawks marched to the line 24 times but converted just 14.

After shooting 54% in the first quarter, AUM slipped to 22% in the second stanza and 23% against Lee's stout defense in the third period. For the game the host shot 33% from the field (18-of-54) and connected on 7-of-29 triples. The Lee defense forced AUM into 16 floor mistakes, most coming in the second half.

Coach Marty Rowe's thoughts:

"It was a much better second half from the team. We did not play well in the first half, and we were pleased just to be tied at the break. They outhustled us in the first half and to hold them under 60 points after the bad start is a great accomplishment."

"Mia Hurst had an excellent game, five assist and no turnovers and she hustled very well."

"We will just keep finding ways to win. We will get everyone healthy and get ready to go against Shorter."
