Lady Flames Dominate Second Half, Topple Bears, 15-6

HICKORY, N.C. – The Lee women's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the young season topping Lenoir-Rhyne, 15-6 with a dominating second half performance on Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Flames used a similar script to their opening win last weekend at Tusculum as they blew open a close game at the half outscoring the Bears, 8-1 over the final 30. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 0-2. Lee was able to exact some revenge on Lenoir-Rhyne after dropping a tough 8-7 match to the Bears last season.

"This was a game that we came to looking for some redemption.  Last year we played well and lost by one goal because of an inefficient shooting day so we were ready to compete this year," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin. "It was a game that we had to make adjustments on the fly and we successfully made those on both ends.  We often rely on a zone defense and it was not working against LR so we shifted to a man-to-man defense and it worked so much better.  Our defense worked hard all game and did a great job of keeping their attackers out of the 8-meter fan.  When they did get a shot off, Kaleigh Bernard did a great job in goal especially since it was her first outing of the year."

Brittney White led the Lady Flames with five goals. The senior midfielder delivered a first half hat trick and then put an exclamation on the victory by scoring the final two goals of the contest. Fresh off her Gulf South Conference Player of the Week honor, Megan Trout added four goals. Trout and White are tied for the team lead in points with 10 through two games.

"It was the same story on the attack end of the field.  We tried several sets that didn't produce much but we finally settled into some motion that worked.  This team has come so far in their lacrosse abilities.  In years past, we could not have made changes on the fly that turned out productive," said Martin. "I feel that our ride was the best part of our game today.  It ate up a substantial part of their shot clock and rushed them on the attack end.  Brittney White and Megan Trout both had solid games again for us."

Freshman Maggie Luzier tallied three goals of her own while Caleigh Kenna posted a pair of goals and delivered a game-high four ground balls. Noelle Harrington set the offense up with three assists.

Kaleigh Bernard made her first start of the season in goal for Lee and was outstanding with three saves while allowing just six goals. Teanna Sieben started for the Bears and allowed 10 goals in 33:20. Sally Friesen finished the final 26:40 and surrendered five scores.

The Lady Flames stuffed the stat sheet outshooting Lenoir-Rhyne, 36-17. Lee placed 21 shots on mark compared to nine for the home team. The Lady Flames defense forced 22 turnovers and gobbled up 22 ground balls.

The Lady Flames will look to stay unbeaten on the young season as they wrap up a three-game road trip to start the year next Sunday at the University of Virginia at Wise. Opening Draw is set for 2 p.m.
