CARROLLTON, Ga. – Mallory Hampton scored a career-high 24 points and the No. 16 Lee women's basketball team dominated the second half to blow open a close game and seal a road victory at West Georgia, 71-50 on Saturday afternoon.
Hampton added seven assists, six rebounds and four steals to go along with her 24 points. Hampton was lethal from the 3-point line as she canned five triples.
The Lady Flames held just a three-point lead at the intermission but outscored the Wolves, 42-24 in the final 20 minutes.
"We took a good punch from West Georgia in the first half. I have a lot of respect for their coach and the program she is building here. They are trying to get into the GSC Tournament so we knew we would get their best shot," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "I thought we did a nice job of responding to adversity and we battled through some foul trouble early and played much better in the second half."
Addison Smith added 14 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field. Macy Woodworth tallied a double-double as she scored 12 and hauled in 10 rebounds. Haylee Johnson continued to make the most of her starting opportunity with nine points and three rebounds.
Ally Welfel came off the bench to deliver a crucial four-point play late in the quarter. With the Lady Flames leading 42-38 with 1:23 left Welfel drilled a triple in the corner and was fouled. She converted free throw and the Lady Flames never looked back.
"I give Jan (Spangler) a lot of credit. She adjusted some of our offensive sets and got us some really good looks early in the second half to get things going," added Rowe. "We continue to have different people set up for us. I thought Addie (Smith) and Mal (Hampton) played really well today but we had others make a big impact. Allie hits that three and gets fouled when we were only up four late in the third and I thought that was a real turning point of the game."
Lee shot 44.3 percent from the field and were 10 of 27 (37 percent) from beyond the arc. The Lady Flames defense suffocated the Wolves, holding them to just 32.7 percent shooting from the field and forced 18 turnovers.
Stephanie Torres and Peace Okeke led the Wolves with 12 points each. Okeke also grabbed 11 rebounds to tally a double-double.
The Lady Flames improve to 22-4 on the season and are 20-2 in conference play and remain atop the GSC standings with just two regular season games remaining. West Georgia falls to 11-15 overall and 9-13 in the GSC.
Lee is now set for a showdown with longtime rival Union University on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Walker Arena. The Lady Bulldogs have won 10 straight since losing in overtime to the Lady Flames on Jan. 7 and sit just one-game back of Lee.
