CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University softball held off a late rally by the University of West Georgia Wolves on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Flames were up 5-0 going into the top of the seventh inning. UWG scored four runs to make it a one-run game but Lee held on for the opening win of the three game series by a final score of 5-4. Lee improved their record to 4-9 overall and 1-3 in Gulf South Conference play.
UWG had a walk in the first inning but Madison Barnett got two strike outs looking to end the threat. In the bottom of the first, Laney Harris and Javaria Smith were each walked but were left stranded.
The Lady Flames scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Annalyn Ormsby led the inning off with a hit by pitch. Ana Macha followed that up with a walk. Rylie Goodridge reached safely on a fielder's choice bunt to load the bases. Ormsby then scored on a wild pitch to give Lee the lead. Alexa Scalzo smoked a double off the left field fence to score Macha and Goodridge and the Lady Flames led 3-0.
Macha got on base with a single in the bottom of the fourth and then stole second base but was left stranded there. In the fifth, Smith had a single as did Kylie Bohl but them could come around to score. UWG got their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth but left the runner on first base.
Macha had her second hit of the game to start the bottom of the sixth. She stole second base and then advanved to third on a wild pitch. Goodridge walked and then she stole second. Macha came to score on a wild pitch and Goodridge went to third base. Harris had a sacrifice fly in the inning to score Goodridge and Lee led 5-0 after the sixth inning.
UWG used a hit by a pitch, a walk, a double, and a single to score their four runs of the seventh but Barnett was able to get out of the inning.
Scalzo was 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI on the day. Both Macha and Goodridge had two runs scored. Barnett gave up four runs on four hits in the circle for Lee with nine strikeouts.
The Lady Flames will take on UWG in a double header on Sunday, February 26 starting at 1 PM at Butler Field.
