CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team improved its record to 2-0 with a 7-0 defeat of Milligan University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames hit the road to take on Tusculum University at 1 p.m. on Wednesday.
"The guys did a good job coming out with purpose in doubles," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We'll get some rest and get ready for Tusculum on Wednesday."
Lee grabbed the doubles point with a sweep of the three matches. Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston teamed up to take down Gabriel Kajic and Marcos Moreno 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk gave Lee a 1-0 lead after beating Justin Rigsby and Juan Camilo Burgos 6-3 at the third position. Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria completed doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Ryan Thomas and Krishan Teneja.
Faria, ranked No. 16 in the South Region, made quick work of Teneja at No. 1 singles to win 6-1 and 6-0. Quinn Groenendijk beat Nathan Smiley 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth spot. Dasi clinched the Lee team win after a 6-1, 6-3 win over Carter Rigsby.
Mike Groenendijk held off Derian Janeke to win their opening set 6-4 and completed the straight-set victory with a 6-1 score in the second set. Johnston blanked Kajic 6-0 in the first set but needed a 7-4 tie-breaker to win the second set 7-6 and secure the No. 4 singles win.
