CLINTON, Miss. – The No. 14 Lee University men's tennis team edged No. 19 Mississippi College 4-3 Saturday afternoon at the MC Tennis Complex to hand the Choctaws their first conference loss of the season. The Flames improved to 10-2 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), while MC dropped to 9-4, 3-1 GSC.
"Mississippi College are a good team," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our guys showed a lot of composure to come back after dropping the doubles point. We've got stuff to work on, but we'll take this one. GSC road wins never come easy."
The Choctaws won both completed doubles matches. Felipe iser and Rafael Sabio, ranked No. 46, doubled-up Nico Ramirez and Francisco Faria 6-3. Joe Jarvis and Antoine Nivault beat Wihan Van Der Merwe and Drew Johnston 6-2. The No. 2 doubles match was left unfinished with Lee's 37
th-ranked doubles team of Mike and Quinn Groenendijk leading Alvaro Saint Martin and Hsiang Wang 4-3.
Jarvis opened singles competition with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Jordi Dasi at No. 3 singles to push the MC advantage to 2-0. Ramirez, ranked No. 22 in singles, posting matching 6-3 set scores to beat Saint Martin at No. 1 singles and cut the Lee deficit in half.
Faria defeated No. 41 Sabio 6-4 and 6-3 to equalize the team score. Van Der Merwe continued the Lee momentum at No. 4 singles. He held off Nivault 6-4 in the first set and 7-5 in the second to give Lee its first lead of the day.
Quinn Groenendijk clinched the team victory after dropping just three games to Iser at the fifth position. Groenendijk blanked Iser 6-0 in the opening set and completed the win with a 6-3 score in the second.
Brady McDaniel outlasted Johnston to close the gap in the final team score. McDaniel won the first set 6-4 and Johnston forced a third set with a 6-2 mark in the second set. McDaniel won the third set 10-7 in a superset tiebreaker.
The Flames finish the weekend GSC road trip on Sunday at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee. The contest is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EDT.
