YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. – The Lee women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 22 goals in earning a 22-17 Gulf South Conference road victory over Young Harris College on Wednesday evening.
Maggie Luzier tallied eight points with six goals and two assists while freshman phenom Callie Curtis registered six goals off her own and dished off an assist. Brittney White posted 11 draw controls to set up the offense and Kylee Kangas tallied eight. The Lady Flames held a 26-15 edge over the Mountain Lions in the draw circle.
Lee was efficient in the offensive attack with 32 of 38 shots placed on goal. Defensively, Kaleigh Bernard shined in goal with 12 saves and four ground balls while allowing 11 goals in 49:56 of work.
The Lady Flames took a 12-8 edge into the halftime break. By the end of the third quarter the Mountain Lions had pulled within two at 15-13. From there though Lee ran away with five straight goals from the 9:19 mark to Curtis' sixth goal with 27 seconds left.
"We don't have everything figured out yet but today we picked up a road win that had many bright spots. Young Harris has a capable offense and our defense stepped up with pressure. Kaleigh Bernard showed quick hands in goal and picked up 12 saves. We had a good day on draw controls with Brittney White picking up 11 and Kylee Kangus getting 8. Maggie Luzier and Callie Curtis each had 6 goals in the game and it seemed as though our offense finally figured a few things out in our attack," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin.
Ashlyn Fraley scored five goals and Ella Hancock, Ally Cattoni, Ruthie Mandell and Morgan Lewis added two each for Young Harris.
Lee moves to 6-8 on the year and are now 1-2 in the GSC with three home conference games remaining on the schedule. Young Harris falls to 6-9 and 1-3 in league play.
The Lady Flames will return home on Saturday for a showdown with Montevallo at 3 p.m. In addition to beginning a key GSC contest the day will be focused on the goal of "Lacrosse Out Cancer" with t-shirts being sold to benefit the Austin Hatcher Foundation in Chattanooga.
