CARROLLTON, Ga. – The No. 38 Lee University women's tennis team defeated University of West Georgia 5-2 In a Gulf South Conference (GSC) match Wednesday afternoon at the Sunset Hills Country Club. The Lady Flames improved to 11-3 overall and 6-2 within the GSC, while the Wolves fell to 11-9, 2-8 GSC.
Ashleigh Simes and Matina Ujdur opened doubles competition with a 6-2 win over Kennedy Lewis and Patricia Martin-Gomez. Micaela Maiz and Maria Duarte took down Iuliia Dmitrieva and Lara Wedd 6-3 at No. 2 doubles to secure the doubles point for Lee. The No. 3 doubles match was left unfinished with Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Hayden Smith leading Karla Menendez and Luna Mouton 5-4.
Duarte carried momentum over from doubles to her singles match at the No. 5 spot. Duarte blanked Perinne Blachon 6-0 and 6-0 to push the Lee advantage to 2-0. Gnilozubova claimed a 6-2, 6-3 win against Wedd at No. 4 singles.
Maiz posted 6-2 scores in both sets of her match against Martin-Gomez to clinch the team victory. UWG avoided the shutout with a win by Dmitrieva at No. 1 singles. Dmitrieva won the opening set 6-3 and Simes forced a third set by winning the second 6-4. Dmitrieva won the superset tiebreaker 10-6 to win two sets to one.
Ujdur needed three sets to dispose of Menendez at No. 3 singles. Ujdur opened with a 6-1 mark in the first set before Menendez won the second set 7-5. Ujdur outlasted Menendez 10-8 in the superset tiebreaker to record Lee's fifth team point.
Callie Stanfield posted the home team's second win with a 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Smith at the sixth position.
The Lady Flames remain on the road to face AUM on Friday in Montgomery, Alabama. The GSC contest is scheduled for 12 p.m. EDT.
