Flames Shut Out Delta State For Senior Day Victory

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The No. 7 Lee University men's team completed the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 7-0 shutout of Delta State University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Flames improved to 12-3 overall and 5-2 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), while the Statesmen dropped to 1-11, 1-5 GSC.

Prior to the match, Drew Johnston, Denis Muratovic, Nico Ramirez and Pedro Salvatori were honored in a senior day ceremony to recognize their Lee careers.

Delta State only had five players, so Lee began doubles competition needing to win one of the two remaining contests. Mike and Quinn Groenendijk secured the team point with a win at No. 1 doubles. The 44th-ranked duo won 6-2 against Franco Roldan and Jordan Hays. Emiliano Elizarraraz and Sebastiano Sola outlasted Wihan Van Der Merwe and Johnston 7-6 with a 7-2 tiebreaker at the second position.

Mike Groenendijk received a win by default at No. 6 singles to put Lee up 2-0. Jordi Dasi dropped just one game to take down Roldan at No. 2 singles. In a battle of ranked players, No. 21 Ramirez defeated No. 54 Elizarraraz 6-1 and 7-5 to pull the Flames within one of claiming the team victory.

Van Der Merwe secured the team's fourth point with a pair of 7-5 marks in a straight set win over Jordan Hays. Quinn Groenendijk posted scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to handle Jude Heraut in No. 4 singles. Johnston beat Sola at the fifth position 6-3, 6-2 to complete the team shutout.

"The conditions were really difficult, but I think our guys did a great job staying focused," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We'll get some rest and start preparing for another big week."

The Flames are scheduled to return to action on Friday in Montgomery, Alabama, against AUM. The GSC match is set for 11 a.m. EDT.
