CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The No. 36 Lee University women's team completed the home portion of its regular season schedule with a 5-2 defeat of Delta State University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames improved to 10-3 overall and 5-2 in the Gulf South Conference (GSC), while the Lady Statesmen dropped to 1-11, 1-9 GSC.
Prior to the match, Micaela Maiz and Matina Ujdur were honored in a senior day ceremony to recognize their Lee careers.
Delta State only had five players, so Lee began doubles competition needing to win one of the two remaining matches. Maiz and Maria Duarte shut out Maria Caride and Sofia Pepe 6-0 to secure the team point. Ashleigh Simes and Ujdur blanked Marie Guillaume and Adriana Subias at No. 1 doubles.
"Our ladies did a great job closing the door in doubles today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Rest and recovery is our main priority now, then we will prepare for next weekend."
Hayden Smith received a win by default at No. 6 singles to extend the Lee lead to 2-0. Simes, ranked No. 39 in singles, took down Subias 6-2 and 6-3 to put Lee on the brink of winning the match. Maiz clinched the team victory at the second position with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Guillaume.
Delta State won two of the final three matches to close the gap. Caride won the first and third sets 6-4 and 6-2, respectively, to beat Ujdur at No. 3 singles. Ujdur won the second set 6-0. Maria Duarte posted 6-0 scores in both sets to sweep Alyssa Landrum. Elizaveta Gnilozubova won her opening set with Pepe 6-4 before Pepe fought back to win the second set 6-4 and completed the comeback with a 10-7 score in the super set tiebreaker.
The Lady Flames are scheduled to return to action on Friday in Montgomery, Alabama, against AUM. The GSC match is set for 11 a.m. EDT.
