Lady Flames Battle But Fall to Flagler in GSC Semifinals

SAINT AUGUSTINE, Fla. –The Lee University Women's Lacrosse gave the number one seed Flagler University a battle Friday afternoon, but fell just short in the Gulf South Conference Championships. The Lady Flames traded the lead with Flagler four times and led by as many as four goals, but fell short losing 20-14. Caleigh Kenna led the way for the Lady Flames scoring four goals in the loss.

Flagler came out of the gates quickly scoring a goal less than 90 seconds into the contest as Lexie Morton netted the goal. The Saints added another just a minute later to take a two-goal lead. The Lady Flames eventually settled in and Noelle Harrington took a pass from Hannah Vecsey to give Lee their first goal of the game.

A few minutes later, Brittney White tied the game for the Lady Flames. The two teams would trade goals the rest of the first period as Lee would take the 4-3 lead after the first 15 minutes.

The Lady Flames dominated the first ten minutes of the second quarter and pushed the lead out to 7-3 thanks to goals from White, Caleigh Kenna, and Megan Trout. However, Flagler fought right back. The Saints scored three straight goals themselves in just two minutes to pull within one goal at 7-6. Kenna and Maggie Luzier each scored another goal to give Lee the lead at the halftime break 9-7

Flagler started the second half quickly as they scored twice in the first three and half minutes to tie the game at nine apiece. Luzier's second goal gave Lee the lead again but it didn't last long as Flagler tied it a 10-10 with eight minutes left in the third quarter.

The intensity ramped up as Lee pushed the lead out to 12-10, but Flagler responded and scored three straight goals to take their first lead since it was 2-1. The Saints added a couple of more goals to start the fourth quarter and extend the lead out to three. Callie Curtis and White tried to keep the game close, but the Lady Flames just couldn't quite get over the hump.

Flagler scored seven times in the fourth quarter compared to just twice for Lee to pull away. Flagler dialed in the pressure all day taking 40 shots with 32 on goal. Lee managed to take 24 shots with 20 on target. Goalkeeper Kaleigh Bernard kept Lee in the game with 12 saves. White won eight draw controls for Lee as did Kylee Kangas. Besides Kenna's four goals, Luzier and White added three goals apiece.

The Lady Flames finished the season with an 8-10 record.
