Flames Make Final Push To Qualify For NCAA DII Championships At Lee Last Chance Meet

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – On the final weekend to meet the provisional qualifying marks for the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, seven members of the Lee University men's team met the provisional standard in four different events.

Leading the way were Titus Lagat and Roberto Fajardo in the 800-meter run. Lagat crossed the finish line in third with a time of 1:48.91 to move to No. 11 among DII performers this season. Fajardo stopped the clock at 1:50.48 (14th) to meet the provisional time of 1:50.48. His time is the 33rd-fastest time reported.

Jacob Hatcher met the mark in the 1500 and Eli Brooks did the same in the pole vault. Hatcher's time of 3:48.49 is No. 53 time among those meeting the 3:49.46 qualifying time. Brooks cleared 4.85 meters to meet the 4.82-meter provisional and land at No. 38.

Hatcher was fifth in the 1500 with Evan Moore and Ryan Lovelace finishing 18th and 30th, respectively. Moore finished the race in 3:54.53 and Lovelace in 3:59.85.

The 4x400 relay team of Titus Lagat, Nokia Masengu, Niquaine Henry and Justin Steele also surpassed the provisional time of 3:14.07. The foursome combined for a Lee Last Chance Record time of 3:11.48 to stand at No. 28 in DII. Steele covered the final 400-meter leg in 46.352 seconds to move the Flames from fourth place to first.

The 4x100 team of Doniven Jackson, Henry, Steele and Masengu were ninth with a time of 41.14 seconds.

Steele also placed 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.35. Jackson finished 15th in the 200 at 21.68 seconds and was 17th (10.75) in the 100.

Aaron Himes was Lee's top finisher in the 5000 after crossing the line at 14:19.19 for second place. Matthew Fowler (14:36.09) was 10th and Stephen Clark (15:38.74) was 42nd.

Camden Williams was fifth in the discus with a throw of 47.40 meters. Braxton Philpott was 10th with a mark of 40.99 meters. Philpott recorded a throw of 47.40 meters to place sixth in the hammer throw. Matthew Black was just behind in eighth with a throw of 44.07 meters. Williams was fifth with a 14.95-meter throw of the shot put, while Black finished eighth with a throw of 13.40 meters. Caleb Long finished ninth after throwing the javelin 53.02 meters.

Sunday, May 14, is the final day a qualifying mark may be made with final declarations of athletes to be considered for the championships field to be made by midday Monday. The championships fields are scheduled to be posted on NCAA.com by 6 p.m. EDT.
