Flames Win 2023 GSC Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Claim Program's Third Title

RESULTS

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Lee University men's track & field team led from start to finish in recording the program's third title at the 2023 Gulf South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend at the Ray Conn Sports Complex. The Flames also won the GSC Outdoor Championship in 2016 and 2019.

Over the three days of competition, the Flames accumulated 241 points to win by 50 points. Mississippi College finished second with 191 points and Alabama Huntsville was third with 174.
Cale Kassen was recognized as the Most Outstanding Overall Performer and the Most Outstanding Freshman Performer.

Eli Brooks began the file day with a first-place finish in the pole vault. He cleared 4.60 meters to place ahead of MC's Benjamin Woolhouse and UAH's Thomas Vaughn who each hit 4.50 meters. Riley Margene was fourth with a height of 4.40 meters. Randall Kramer, Caleb Long and Cameron Stine gave Lee four of the top eight positions. Kramer and Long cleared 3.95 meters for sixth and seventh, respectively. Stine finished in eighth with a vault of 3.80 meters.

Camden Williams finished third in the shot put with a throw of 15.07 meters. Matthew Black placed 15th with a throw of 12.13 meters and Braxton Philpott was 17th with a mark of 11.74 meters.

Brooks, Long and Myles Mann completed the field events with the javelin throw. Brooks' throw of 55.92 meters put him in second place, while Long finished third with a distance of 55.86 meters. Mann was ninth overall after throwing the javelin 47.05 meters.

The track events began with Doniven Jackson, Kassen, Nokia Masengu and Justin Steele placing third in the 4x100 relay with a combined time of 41.09 seconds. UAH was first across the line at 40.35.

The Flames placed four runners among the top six finishers of the 1500-meter run. Roberto Fajardo (3:49.61) was second, Ryan Lovelace was third (3:50.16) and Jacob Hatcher was right behind in fourth (3:50.20). Aaron Himes stopped the clock at 3:51.25 for sixth. Caleb Guthery placed 17th with a time of 4:03.36.

Kassen added another individual championship in the 110-meter hurdles. He posted a GSC Championships Record of 13.81 seconds to win by 0.08 seconds.

In the 400-meter dash, Steele finished third (47.27) and Masengu (48.58) was sixth. Jackson added four more points to the team total after placing fifth with a time of 10.54 in the 100-meter dash. Steele claimed fifth with a time of 21.31 in the 200-meter dash.

Titus Lagat finished 0.74 seconds ahead of Gabe Hodson of Mississippi College to collect the 800-meter championship with a time of 1:51.04. Evan Moore was fourth (1:53.43), while Hatcher (1:59.41) was 15th and Fajardo (2:09.23) finished 21st.

Henry and Cunningham added two more top-six finishes in the 400-meter hurdles. Henry was fourth with a time of 56.11 seconds and Cunningham (57.54) was sixth. Stine crossed the finish line just outside of scoring position in ninth (59.85).

The 4x400 relay team of Masengu, Henry, Lagat and Steele supplied the exclamation point to the weekend with the team's seventh event win. The foursome combined for a time of 3:11.88 to hold off Christian Brothers (3:12.19).
