13 Lee Athletes Earn GSC Spring All-Academic Team Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – 13 Lee University Student Athletes were named to the Gulf South Conference Spring All-Academic teams the league office announced on Friday. 136 additional student-athletes were named to the Spring Academic Honor Roll. Lee had the second most All-Academic team members and the second most honor roll members in the GSC

Women's lacrosse led the way for Lee with three student athletes named to the All-Academic team. For the third straight season, Brittney White has been named to the All-Academic team. White has a 3.97 GPA in athletic training. She was a Second Team All-IWCLA South region member . She was also on the First Team All-GSC. White led the team with 54 goals which is fourth best in the GSC. She took 106 shots which was third most in the GSC. She won 144 draw controls which was 43 more than anyone else in the GSC. She  won the fourth most draw controls in all of NCAA DII this season.

Kaleigh Bernard has been named to the All-Academic team for the second straight year. Bernard has a 3.94 GPA in human development/early childhood education. She started 17 games this year and had 110 saves. Her save percentage was .423%.

Kelsey McGowen has been named to the All-Academic team for the first time. She had a 3.75 GPA in biology and 6-12 teaching licensure. She was on the Second Team All-GSC this year. She anchored the defense for Lee this season. She helped Lee to 225 clears and 260 ground balls.  She scooped up 18 ground balls and forced 20 turnovers. She  scored one goal this season and took three shots.
 
The women's track and field team had two members. Deborah Rubin, a member of the GSC Winter All-Academic Team, had a 3.83 GPA while earning a Master of Science-human development emphasis. At the GSC Championships, she won the hammer throw and the discuss throw, while coming in second in the shot put. 
  
The second member of the women's track and field team to be on the All-Academic team is Celine Ritter. She had a 4.0 GPA while earning an Master's of Business Administration. She was the national champion in the 1500 meter run at the NCAA Championships and came in third in the 5000 meter while running both races within three hours. At the GSC Championships, she set new GSC records in the 800 meter, 1500 meter, and the 10,000 meter while winning all three races. She has been on the GSC All-Academic team the last two years.

The men's track and field team had two members named to the All-Academic team. Will Stone, had a 4.0 GPA in biochemistry. He was the GSC cross country champion scholar athlete this season. He has been on the All-Academic team in cross country and the indoor track and field this year. He has been on the honor roll every semester and has been a USTFCCCA All-Academic member as well.
 
Eli Brooks has been named to the GSC All-Academic team for the first time. He has a 3.81 GPA in mathematics. He was on the Indoor Track and Field honor roll this year. At the outdoor GSC championship, he won the pole vault. He also came in second in the javelin throw

The Lee University men's golf team also had two members on the All-Academic team. For the third straight year, Beck Burnette has been named to the GSC All-Academic team. Burnette had a 3.48 GPA in communications. He earned the prestigious GSC Commissioners Cup Trophy for the second straight year. Burnette was named a Ping First Team All-American and a GCAA First Team All-American this season. He has been named to three straight First Team All-GSC. He accomplished the feat in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He is one of 12 golfers to earn three All-GSC awards and he is one of three to be first team all three times. The Bryon Nelson Award finalist, had a scoring average of 69.64. He is ranked as the #2 NCAA DII golfer in the country. He was also named the GSC Golfer of the Year and helped the Flames advance to the medal match play round of the 2023 NCAA Division National Championship.

Golfer Dustin Demersseman was named to the All-Academic team for the first time. DeMersseman had a 3.62 GPA in business administration. DeMersseman was a GCAA All-South region member and a second team All-GSC selection in 2021. He has a scoring average of 72.98 this year. He is ranked seventh in the south region and ranked in the top 50 nationally. He finished in the Top 20 in five of six tournaments this spring and had nine rounds under par this semester.

The Lady Flames golf team added two members to the All-Academic team. Supuschaya Srinchtamit is on the All-Academic team for the third straight year. Srichantamit has a 3.97 GPA in international business. She was named to the Women's Golf Coach's Association DII All-American First Team and was the GSC Golf of the Year. Srichantamit helped lead the Lady Flames to their first GSC championship since 2019. She also was a part of the team that finished in sixth at the NCAA South Region.

Carson McKie was named to the golf All-Academic team for the first time. McKie had a 3.74 GPA in business administration. She was a First Team All-GSC Member this year. This is the second time McKie has been named to the All-GSC team. In 2019, she was on the second team All-GSC. He average score this year is a 76.21. She has five top 25 finishes nad 15 of 19 rounds played shot in the 70s.

The Flames tennis team had one member named to the All-Academic team. Nico Ramirez was named to the team for the second straight season. Ramirez had a 3.81 GPA while earning a degree in management. He was a First Team All-GSC member and went 9-6 in singles and 9-5 in doubles.

The final member for Lee University on the All-Academic teams was Micaela Maiz. A member of the Lady Flames tennis team, Maiz in on the All-Academic team for the first time. Maiz, a senior from Buenos Aires, Argentina, has a 3.81 GPA in business Aadministration. She was a second team All-GSC member this year. She went 10-5 overall singles record at the number two position and went 7-3 in GSC. In number two doubles, she is team leading 14-1 doubles record.

All-Academic teams are voted on by the conference's Athletic Communications Directors. Athletes must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or higher, have spent at least one year on campus at the institution. The teams are comprised of athletes that achieved combination of both academic and athletic success this season.

Athletes must maintain a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher to receive honor roll recognition. Overall, 1,198 student-athletes were acknowledged on the GSC Honor Roll list while 109 of those had a 4.00 GPA.
 
  • The 1,265 GSC Honor Roll names represents a 5.5 percent uptick from the 2022 spring awards.
  • Baseball was the best represented sport with 320 honorees, followed by softball (223), women's lacrosse (149), women's track & field (147) and men's track & field (131) … women's sports accounted for about 52.2 percent of all honor roll names.
  • 59 percent (747) of names on the honor roll list had a 3.5 or better GPA.
  • 124 Spring sport student-athletes (9.8 percent) had a GPA of 4.0.
  • Five schools had a 100 or more student-athletes named to the honor roll — Montevallo (158), Lee (136), Alabama Huntsville (128), Mississippi College (115) and Shorter (105).
  • 14 schools were represented on the All-Academic lists … Mississippi College led the way with 18 honorees, while Lee and Montevallo followed with 13 apiece.
