Men's Golf Place 8th in Weather-Shortened Opener

ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Lee men's golf team opened the fall season by placing tied for eighth in the Folds of Honor Challenge at the Meadows. The Flames played 36 holes on Sunday, but Monday's 18-hole conclusion was cancelled due to weather conditions in the Allendale area.

Sophomore Bennett McNabb, who finished the 2022 season strong, paced the Lee scoring, firing a 1-over 143 on the par 71 layout. He placed sixth in the field that was led by Drew Coble of host Grand Valley (74-66) and Jose Ramirez of Indian Hills CC (70-67), both posting a -4 and 137 total.

Senior Noah Ross carded a +6 147 and finished in a tie for 28th. Veteran senior returnee Oliver Lewis-Perkins was tied for 38th (76-74). Sophomore George Cordall followed at 75-73 and another sophomore Wyatt Brackett came in at 76-75. Freshman Mitchell Strickland battled back after a slow start and totaled 81-74.

Coach Evan Spence's Thoughts

"First and foremost, I want to highlight some of the positives. I was very proud of the performances from Bennett and Noah individually this weekend. They were both extremely steady throughout the day yesterday and Bennett's 6th-place finish marks the highest individual finish of his career thus far. I am looking forward to continuing to watch him grow and develop this season and I know that the sky is the limit for him."

"As far as the team is concerned, obviously is not the result we were hoping for this weekend. Yesterday was one of those days where our execution just wasn't consistently where it needed to be across the board, which certainly can happen from time to time in the game of golf.

"I was very hopeful that the weather would cooperate with us today and give us a chance to get back out because I know our guys were eager to make a move up the board in some tough conditions, but ultimately, we didn't get that opportunity.

"Still, the tournament this week was a great chance for us to knock some of our competitive rust off at a very challenging course and we look forward to regrouping as a team over the next several days and coming back stronger at Mizuno Intercollegiate (North Georgia) next week."
