Nine Lee Athletes Earn GSC Fall All-Academic Team Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Nine Lee University Student Athletes were named to the Gulf South Conference Fall All-Academic teams the league office announced on Friday. 69 student-athletes were named to the Fall Academic Honor Roll.

The women's cross country team led the way with four representatives: Aria Hawkins, Danielle Horter, Liza Kellerman, and Katie Krueger. Hawkins has a 3.36 GPA in psychology. She won the GSC title and the NCAA South region title this year and was 91st in the NCAA Championships.

Horter has a 3.94 GPA in psychology. She was fifth at the GSC Championship, 6th in the NCAA South Region, and 70th at the NCAA Championship. She was an All Academic Team member last year and on the honor roll. Kellerman has a 3.941 GPA in business finance. She was third at the GSC Championship, third in the NCAA South Region, and 41st at the NCAA Championship. She was on the honor roll last year. Krueger has a 3.99 GPA in political science. She was 8th at the GSC Championship, 14th in the NCAA South Region, and 106th at the NCAA Championship. She was on the honor roll last year.

The men's soccer team had one representative: Eamon McLaughlin. McLaughlin has a 3.33 GPA in business administration. He was a D2 CCA All South Region member and a First Team All-GSC member. McLaughlin led the attack for the Flames this year. His seven goals lead the team and is tied for fourth most in the GSC. His 41 shots are fourth most in the conference and has 21 of those shots on goal. He was named United Soccer Coaches National Player of the Week for the Week of September 5. He was also GSC player of the week for that week. He has played and started 14 games this season for Lee averaging 85 minutes a game. He also had two game winning goals.

The women's soccer team had two representatives as well: Kate Dirkse and Grace Berry. Dirkse has a 3.97 GPA in accounting. She was an CSC Academic All-American. United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American, a D2 CCA First Team All-American. This season she was the Gulf South Conference defender of the year and on the First Team All-GSC. Kate was a preseason All-GSC member, and was a USCA Second Team All-American last year. Along with a D2CCA Third Team All-American, First Team All-South Region, First Team All-GSC, and GSC All-Tournament team last year.

Berry has a 3.50 GPA in nursing. She was a First Team All-GSC member as well. Berry  helped lead the Lady Flames offense this season. She scored six goals and had seven assists this season.  She took 21 shots with 26 shots on goal. She has played in all 21 games for the Lady Flames and has 21 starts. She has scored three game winning goals this season.  She has helped the Lady Flames lead the GSC in goals scored with 62. 

The men's cross country team had the final two representatives: Matthew Fowler and Jacon Hatcher. Fowler has a 3.20 GPA in business. He was 4th at the GSC Championship, 4th in the NCAA South Region, and 69th at the NCAA Championship. 

Hatcher has a 3.90 GPA while earning a MBA. He was 13th at the GSC Championship, 9th in the NCAA South Region, and 103rd at the NCAA Championship. He was on the honor roll last season.

This was the third time for both Danielle Horter and Kate Dirkse to be named to the GSC All-Academic team. Everyone else made their debut on the All-Academic Team.

A record 1,197 student-athletes were named to the honor roll, representing a near 3 percent (2.92%) increase from Fall 2022. 712 student-athletes recorded a 3.50 GPA including a 127 with a 4.0. Three schools had 100+ student-athletes recognized – Mississippi College (138), Shorter (116), and West Florida (102). This is the 7th-time in the last 8 years MC was the most represented institution in the Fall sports honor roll list. 78 student-athletes selected for All-Academic, led by 19 from West Florida. Every full GSC member was represented with at least one honoree.

All-Academic teams are voted on by the conference's Athletic Communications Directors. Athletes must have a 3.20 cumulative GPA or higher, have spent at least one year on campus at the institution. The teams are comprised of athletes that achieved combination of both academic and athletic success this season.

Athletes must maintain a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher to receive honor roll recognition.
