Strong Second Half Propels Lee Past UWF

PENSACOLA, Fla. –A 43-point second half for the Lee University Flames, led them past the University of West Florida 70-51 Thursday evening to snap a three-game losing streak. Three Flames scored in double digits including a game high 26 points from Beyuan Hendricks which proved to be the difference in the contest. After leading by just four points at the halftime break, Lee outscored UWF by 15 in the final 20 minutes to improve to 10-5 and 8-5 in Gulf South Conference action.

Both teams came out of the gate very slowly. The Argos scored the first bucket of the game, but it took them two and half minutes to score. On the next trip, JJ Barnes hit a three-point shot for the first points of the game which ignited an 8-run for the Flames.

After the teams traded shots, UWF went on a 6-0 run to give them a 23-17 lead which was their largest of the game. The Flames responded with their second 8-0 run of the game to retake the 25-23 lead. The Flames ended up leading 27-24 at the halftime break.

Lee dominated the second half. Tim Vaughn came out strong for the Flames to start the second half scoring the first five points of the half and the Flames were off to the races. Lee never looked back and won the game by 15 points.

The Flames outrebounded the Argos 40-27 in the contest. Lee was led by Makhi McGuire who had a career high 10 rebounds. Barnes had 10 points as did Vaughn who also collected eight rebounds.

The Flames will be back in action on Saturday at 4 PM as they will take on Valdosta State University in Valdosta, Ga.

Coach Bubba Smith's Thoughts:

"Proud of the effort the guys displayed tonight, especially defensively. We've been talking about finding more consistency and I thought tonight was closer to what we're capable of."

"Even with an average offensive night you can win games if you guard with urgency and finish plays."

"I thought we also got some good minutes and bench contribution tonight, which you need in the GSC."

"Big test on Saturday."
