Flames Come Up Short in Loss to UWF

Pensacola, Fla. – Tariq Daughton had a shot a game tying three to end the game, but came up just short as the Lee University men's basketball team fell to the University of West Florida on Thursday evening. The Flames led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but the Argos refused to go away and handed Lee the 63-60 loss. The Flames dropped their fifth straight game and go to 4-5 overall and 0-5 in Gulf South Conference action

The Flames will continue the road trip with a contest at red-hot Valdosta State University on Saturday. The Blazers are 8-2 on the year.

Tim Vaughn and Zach Gray started the game off strong and led the Flames to an early six-point lead, but the Argos fought back and took a 32-28 lead right before the halftime break. Tariq Daughton scored a bucket with 17 seconds left in the first half and Lee trailed 32-30 at the intermission.

The second half had the Flames start quickly again as they ran out on a 12-2 run to take the 38-32 lead. A couple of Willie Walton three-point shots and Tylon Chatman jumpers pushed it out to 52-40 lead with 9:45 left in the game.

However, UWF started slowly closing the gap with free throws. The Argos were 12-of-16 from the charity stripe in the second half while Lee was only 4-for-7.

The Flames offense struggled shooting as over the next five minutes of action they only managed to score two points. A free throw gave UWF the 57-56 lead with 2:08 left in the contest. Despite Chatman and Noah Boler-Kyle making a couple of free throws and a jumper, the Flames could not tie the game back up and fell 63-60.

Boler-Kyle led the way for Lee with 11 points and seven rebounds. Marlon Smith and Walton each had ten points while Vaughn had eight rebounds.
