Lady Flames Start Season 6-0 After Sweep of Shorter

ROME, Ga. –For the first time since the 2013 season, the Lee University softball team has started a season 6-0. Lee defeated Shorter University 14-3 on Saturday afternoon to earn the series sweep. The Lady Flames outscored Shorter 50-12 in the three games with all three going less than the full seven innings.

The Lady Flames took advantage of a couple of errors from Shorter in the first inning. Six hits helped bring in eight runs thanks to a double from Kylie Bohl and a two-run home run from Ava Perkins. 15 Lady Flames came to bat in the first innings.

Shorter got a run back in the bottom of the first using a couple of singles to plate a run. After neither team scored in the second inning, Lee added two more runs in the third behind another two-run home run this time from Bohl.

The Lady Flames plated three more in the fourth inning as Laney Harris drove in a run and Lee added two runs after another Lady Hawks error. Shorter scored twice in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run and a couple more singles but the Lady Flames won 14-3.

Olivia Tyson earned her fourth win of the season going three innings and giving up one run on six hits while earning two strikeouts. Abigail Welbaum threw two innings in relief and gave up two runs on four hits with one strikeout.

Bohl led the way at the plate for Lee going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Alexa Scalzo scored three times while Javaria Smith also scored twice.

This is the best start in NCAA DII history for Lee. In 2013, the final season of NAIA play, Lee started the season 18-0 before losing to Shorter.

The Lady Flames will be back in action on Wednesday February 21 as they will go to Harrogate, Tenn. to take on Lincoln Memorial. The double header is slated to begin at 1 PM.
