HARROGATE, Tenn. – The No. 13 Lee University men's tennis team edged host Lincoln Memorial University 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Indoor Tennis Facility. The Flames improved to 4-1 while the Railsplitters fell to 6-3.
Wihan van der Merwe and Jordi Dasi opened doubles competition with a 6-4 win over Mateo Rivera Carbaja and Luca Pavan. LMU claimed the top two doubles spots with 7-5 tiebreakers.
The team score was tied up with van der Merwe's 6-4, 6-3 win over William Jonsson at No. 2 singles. Francisco Faria gave Lee the lead with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Alexandru Giurea.
Thom Hermans beat Yike Liu 6-4 and 6-1, while Radu Florea beat Dasi 6-3, 6-4 to regain the lead and pull within one of securing the team win.
Viktor Yanev opened his No. 6 singles match with a 6-2 advantage against Harper Mills. Mills forced a third set with a 6-3 score in the second set. Yanev evened the team score at 3-3 after claiming the third set 6-4.
Filipe Krohn and Franco Battaglino found themselves the focus. Krohn won their first set 6-1 and Battaglino grabbed the second 6-2. In the singles match to determine the team winner, a third set was needed to break their own tie. Krohn regained the momentum and delivered a 6-2 three-set win to clinch the team victory.
The Flames remain on the road with a scheduled trip to Valdosta State University on March 9. The GSC match is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the VSU Tennis Courts.
