JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The No. 24 Lee University men's tennis team took down No. 45 Carson-Newman University 4-1 in a non-conference matchup Sunday afternoon at the Buddy A. Catlett Tennis Complex. The Flames improved to 5-1 overall, while the Eagles fell to 4-4.
Mike and Quinn Groenendijk opened doubles competition with a 6-3 win over Marc Janse and Matthew Saunders at the second position. Wihan van der Merwe and Jordi Dasi defeated Paul Gayk and Gjorgji Jankulovski 6-4. Lee's 44
th-ranked doubles team of Francisco Faria and Filipe Krohn completed the sweep with a 6-4 defeat of Lars Hordijk and Marnix Van Dalen.
Quinn Groenendijk posted scores of 6-3 and 6-3 to beat Gayk at No. 4 singles. Faria pushed the Lee advantage to 3-0 after beating Van Dalen 6-3, 6-4.
Hordijk outlasted Krohn for a three-set win at No. 5 singles to end Lee's hopes of a shutout. Hordijk won the first set 6-3 and the third set 6-4, while Krohn claimed the second set 6-2.
Dasi dropped his opening set with Jankulovski 7-6 following a 7-4 tiebreaker. Dasi responded with a 6-3 second set and completed the comeback with a 6-4 margin in the third set to clinch the team win.
The final two singles matches were left unfinished with van der Merwe leading Janse 5-3 in the second set after winning the first 7-6. Saunders led Yanev 6-3, 4-3 at No. 6 singles.
The Flames travel to Young Harris College on Tuesday for another non-conference match. First serve at the Bob & Gayle Nichols Tennis Complex is set for 4 p.m.
